Background

Biographical / Historical:

Daniel Drake, 1785-1852, was an American physician and writer. He was born in Plainfield, New Jersey on October 20, 1785. He studied medicine under William Goforth in Cincinnati from 1800 to 1805, and he graduated from the medical school of the University of Pennsylvania, the first person to earn a medical diploma west of the Allegheny Mountains. He established his medical practice in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1807. Drake is best known for his writings on the topics of medical education, geology, botany, and meteorology. He also taught and lectured at several American universities, including the University of Louisville, Jefferson Medical College, and Transylvania University. He died on November 5, 1852 in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Charles Daniel Drake, 1811-1892, was a U.S. senator and the son of Daniel Drake. He was born on April 11, 1811, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He attended St. Joseph's College in Bardstown, Kentucky from 1823 to 1824, and Partridge's Military Academy in Middletown, Connecticut from 1824 to 1825. He read law with his uncle Benjamin Drake in Cincinnati and practiced as a lawyer in both Cincinnati, Ohio and St. Louis, Missouri. He is known for being a fierce opponent of slavery and a leader of the Radical Republicans. Drake was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served from March 4, 1867, to December 19, 1870. He died on April 1, 1892, in Washington, D.C.

Scope and Content:

The Drake mss., 1848-1849, consists of the letters of physician Daniel Drake, 1785-1852, to his children, copied by his son, U.S. senator Charles Daniel Drake, 1811-1892. Included is also a letter of February 26, 1944, from physician and historian Emmet Field Horine, 1885-1964, to physician Edgar Fayette Kiser, 1880-1958.
