Background

Biographical / Historical:

Lyman Copeland Draper, 1815-1891, was a librarian and historian of early America. He was born on September 4, 1815 in Lockport, New York, a descendant of early Massachusetts settler James Draper, 1618–1694. On account of his interest in early American history, Draper began corresponding with settlers from the Trans-Allegheny region in 1838. This correspondence provided valuable first-hand accounts of the settlement of the region, the Indian Wars in the Ohio River Valley, and the Battle of King's Mountain. Draper served as the secretary for the State Historical Society of Wisconsin from 1854 to 1886. During that time, he compiled 10 volumes of historical notes for the Society concerning his correspondence and other papers. Draper's original notes and correspondence are held by the Wisconsin Historical Society in the Lyman Draper Manuscript Collection. Draper died on August 26, 1891 in Madison, Wisconsin.
