The Evans, Montgomery, mss., 1918-1952, are letters and papers of Montgomery Evans, 1898-1954, book collector. They consist principally of letters to Evans from literary figures. Some of them are mounted in books in the Lilly Library which came from Evans' library.

Biographical / Historical:

Montgomery Evans, 1898-1954, was a book collector.

Scope and Content:

In addition to personal affairs, the letters comment on famous authors such as James Branch Cabell, Fedor Mikhailovich Dostoevski, Claude Farrere, Frank Harris, Henry Louis Mencken, and Herbert George Wells. Other letters deal with antisemitism, Evans' escape from the torpedoed "Athenia", Russians, and World War II, particularly France. Included is also a poem on Emil Fuchs, 1866-1929, painter and sculptor, by Aleister Crowley; The Antecedents of Thelema by Aleister Crowley; an agreement between Montgomery Evans and Kegan Paul, French, Trubner and Company for the publication of Prodigal Sons in England, 1928; one page of Bibliomania, Robert Burton his book, and Writers and printing all by Holbrook Jackson; and a few photographs of Aleister Crowley.

Among the correspondents are William Aspenwall Bradley, Thomas Burke, Aleister Crowley, Francis Welch Crowninshield, Vardis Fisher, David Garnett, Karl J. Germer, Leah Hirsig, Holbrook Jackson, Charles Robert Stansfeld Jones, Edward Pierre Loving, Norman Mudd, Liam O'Flaherty, Dorothy Olsen, Elliot Harold Paul, Cyril Percival, George Seldes, Albert Forbes Sieveking, and Hendrik Willem van Loon.
