Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Fischer mss., 1888-1975 contains the correspondence and writings of German publisher Samuel Fischer (1859-1934). Born in Hungary, Fischer started out as a bookseller in Germany. While living and working in Berlin, he joined the publishing firm of Hugo Steinitz. In 1886, Fischer then founded his own publishing house S. Fischer, Verlag, which continues to publish prestige literature today in Germany.

The Fischer mss., ca. 1888-1975, consists of the correspondence and manuscripts from the files of German publisher Samuel Fischer, 1859-1934. Where available, correspondence includes carbon copies or transcripts of Fischer's correspondence with the particular author.
