Biographical / Historical:

The Forster mss., 1920-1935 contains the correspondence of English novelist Edward Morgan Forster (1879-1970). Born in London, Forster later attended Tonbridge School and King's College, Cambridge. He became an influential member of the Cambridge group "The Apostles." And later in life, he became known for his Edwardian novels, which often bridged Victorian-era realism with early-modernist critiques of class hypocrisy, gender and sexuality, and the condition of England. Novels of note include The Longest Journey (1907), A Room with a View (1908), Howards End (1910), A Passage to India (1924), and Maurice (written 1913-1914; published 1971). Throughout his literary career, Forster also wrote several short stories as well as some plays and libretti.

The Forster mss., 1920-1935, consists of correspondence of Edward Morgan Forster, 1879-1970, novelist, with authors, editors, and publishers about his publications and literary figures. Included are also essays, Breaking Up and A Conversation; and two reviews, A Mediterranean Problem, D'Annunzio by Tommaso Antongini and The Feast of Tongues, Oscar Wilde by Frank Harris. Among the correspondents are Sibyl Colefax, E. M. Gilpin, and Ellery Sedwick.
