Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Club is a study group actively involved in promoting music education in many ways. It produces eight monthly programs a year, provides program contributions to civic and social affairs in Bloomington, and conducts exchange programs with clubs over the state of Indiana. Over the years individual members have also directed Junior Clubs, first established in 1921 and numbering six in 1979.

Formal organization of the club began in 1906, although the group had existed informally for some years before then, apparently as the Automathian Club. At the September 21, 1906 meeting, the name was changed to The Friday Musical Club, in October of that year it became affiliated with the Local Council of Women, and in 1908 joined the Federation of Music Clubs. The "e" was added to the name in 1922 and the group has remained the Friday Musicale since that time.

Scope and Content:

The Friday Musicale mss., ca. 1925-1980, consist of calendars, programs and achievement books of the Bloomington, Indiana affiliate of the National Federation of Music Clubs. In addition to calendars and achievement books, there are a few historical programs including "Friday Musical presents Mrs. Carrie Hyatt Kennedy" and "Friday Musical presents Dr. Harry Dexter Kitson, May 11, 1920."

The achievement books begin in 1962 and are scrapbooks that contain both Friday Musicale and State and National Federation newspaper publicity. They also have the calendars for each year.

A statue award: "H-T Community Service Award, 2nd Place, 1976. Friday Musicale," completes the collection.

There is a list of collection contents in the Vertical File.
