Background

Biographical / Historical:

Louis Henry Cohn, 1889-1953, was a New York bookseller with a particular interest in English Nobel Prize winning author John Galsworthy, 1867-1933.

Scope and Content:

The Galsworthy mss. II, 1925-1933, consists of correspondence and manuscripts of New York bookseller Louis Henry Cohn, 1889-1953, relating to his interest in and collection of English Nobel Prize winning author John Galsworthy, 1867-1933.

Correspondents in the collection are Louis Henry Cohn, John Cournos, Richard Curle, John C. Eckel, Ada Pearson (Cooper) Galsworthy, John Galsworthy, Charles Rowland Johns, Rudolf Helmut Sauter, and Viola Wood Sauter.

The writings by John Galsworthy present include disbound pages from The Burning Spear (London, Chatto & Windus, 1919) title page and pp. 7-20; Five Tales (London: Heinemann, 1918) "Indian Summer of a Forsyte," pp. 289-350; The Inn of Tranquility (London: Heinemann, 1919) pp. 203-278; Saint's Progress (London: Heinemann, 1919) pp. 1-392; and A Sheaf (London: Heinemann, 1916) pp. 129-146. All of these items carry holograph corrections and revisions preparatory to the Manaton edition of The Works of John Galsworthy, published in 1923-24. Other writings are a typescript poem "Phew!" ("for insertion in The Spectator of March 15/30"); a carbon typescript of Soames and the Flag from which Heinemann printed the limited English edition in 1930; and a typescript of an essay, "Twelve Books--And Why," marked for the printer.

A photograph of Galsworthy's home in Sussex and a tear sheet published as the frontispiece in H.V. Marrot's Galsworthy bibliography (London: Elkin Mathews & Marrot, 1928) complete the collection.
