Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Gathorne-Hardy, J. mss., 1705-2016 contains the correspondence and private writings of British writer Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy (1933-2019). Born in Edinburgh, Gathorne-Hardy befriended composer Benjamin Britten as a young boy, and later attended Bryanstone school and Cambridge University. While he worked briefly in advertisement and publishing worlds, Gathorne-Hardy is known for his writings: namely, his biographical studies, social histories, and children's stories. His biographies include Sex The Measure of All Things: A Life of Alfred C. Kinsey and The Interior Castle: A Life of Gerald Brenan. His children's works include the Jane's Adventures series and the Cyril books.

Also included are the papers and photographs of, and papers relating to, members of his family, including Anne Hill, Robert Gathorne-Hardy, and Antony Gathorne-Hardy. Arrangement:

The collection is organized into the following series: I. Family; II. Legal and Financial; III. Education and Early Writings; IV. Photographs, V. Journals; VI. Writings; VII. Reviews; VIII. Date Books; IX. Writings by Others; X. Correspondence; and XI. Audio/Visual and Born Digital.

The series "Family" consists of documents belonging to or relating to his family members. The papers of Gathorne-Hardy's aunt, Anne Hill, a bookseller, may be of particular interest.

"Journals" consist of Gathorne-Hardy's journals, which feature almost daily entries from September 1952 to August 2011.

"Correspondence" is arranged following original order. One subseries consists of what Gathorne-Hardy referred to as his "personal files," which include outgoing correspondence, clippings, notes, and fragments from the indicated timespan. The series also includes letters received by Gathorne-Hardy, arranged in their received order, which is roughly chronological.

"Writings" encompass drafts, research files, and notes relating to Gathorne-Hardy's writings, both published and unpublished, organized alphabetically. Two of Gathorne-Hardy's notable projects are biographies of Alfred Kinsey (Sex the Measure of All Things and Gerald Brenan (The Interior Castle). Some additional correspondence (which largely consist of interview questions about Kinsey and Brenan, respectively) may be found in each of these subseries.

"Writings by Others" primarily features offprints and typescripts of authors other than Gathorne-Hardy, arranged alphabetically by author.

The series "Photographs" follow Gathorne-Hardy's inventory when possible.
