Career: born, Roachdale, Ind., July 3, 1880, son of Columbus and Rachel E. (Edwards) Gillen; student, DePauw University, four terms; taught in common schools and high school for five years; LLB., Indianapolis, 1905; began practice, Indianapolis, Ind., 1905; member, Board of Education, Greencastle, Ind., 1913-1917; prosecuting attorney, 64th Judicial Circuit, Indiana, 1917-1918; associated in practice with Benjamin F. Corwin, 1918-1930; married Nelle F. Williams, May 31, 1922; associated in practice with Glenn H. Lyon, 1930-1933; congressman for 5th Ind. district in 72nd Congress, 1931-1933; judge, Putnam Circuit Court (Indiana), 1934-1940; Democrat; Methodist; children, Wayne G., Mary Elizabeth, Rachel Mae.

The Gillen mss., 1930-1933, are papers of Courtland Craig Gillen, 1880-1954, Congressman from Indiana.
The manuscripts in this collection are political in nature and consist principally of letters to Gillen, then in Congress, from constituents in Indiana supporting or opposing the Beck- Linthicum Resolution. This resolution proposed the amendment of the 18th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution (National Prohibition), which was brought to a vote on March 14, 1932. Included is some material on Gillen's 1930 campaign for election to Congress; letters on his chance of winning renomination in the primary election of May 1932; and letters and speeches relating to the taxing of intangibles.
Correspondents are James Montgomery Beck, Ralph Fesler Gates, and Samuel Berrett Pettengill.
