Background

Biographical / Historical:

Robertson Graham, 1795-1885, the eldest son of Thomas and Jane (Cloyd) Graham, was born on 7 November 1795 in Kentucky. As early as 1814, the Graham family settled in what became Monroe County, Indiana. A member of the National Party, Graham fought in the battle of New Orleans in 1815 and settled in what would later become Bloomington, Indiana, in 1818. He kept a hotel in Bloomington for many years. In August 1821, he married Phebe Moberly, 1784-1846. In 1849, he married widow Sabina Loughmiller Horner, 1810-1893. He had seven children by his first marriage and two by his second. Graham died on 14 June 1885.

Scope and Content:

The papers in the collection consist of an account book of Graham and Sutherland, merchants of Ellettsville, Indiana, May 10, 1844-1852; land grants to Robertson Graham and William Graham in the district of lands subject to sale at Clariton, Iowa, 1856; a fragment of a letter relating to the Morgan raid written by Joseph Loughmiller in [1863]; mortgages to and by Robertson Graham, 1864-1865; and Monroe County, Indiana, tax receipts to Robertson Graham, 1874.
