Background

Biographical / Historical:

Thomas Jefferson Griffith, 1837-1924, was born in Clinton County, Indiana, on 2 April 1837. Griffith was raised on a farm and attended a seminary in Crawfordsville, Indiana. In 1863, he enlisted in the 135th Regiment, Indiana Volunteers. From 1865-1867, he studied medicine at the University of Michigan and at the Miami Medical College at Cincinnati. He then opened a medical office in Darlington, Indiana. In the fall of 1889, he opened a general practice in Crawfordsville. He developed the "ice treatment" for diptheria. Griffith died on 6 January 1924.

Martha E. Hutchings Griffith, 1842-1923, was born in Jefferson County, Indiana, on 29 November 1842. She grew up with a strong interest in science and began reading medicine with Dr. N. Richardson in southern Indiana in 1863. In 1866, she entered the Women's Medical College in Philadelphia and soon became the youngest woman to receive a medical diploma and practice in the state of Indiana. She married Thomas J. Griffith on 4 October 1871 and began practicing medicine in Darlington, Indiana. She died on 28 December 1923.

The Griffith mss., 1831-1881, includes an account and commonplace book of Thornton Griffith, 1799-1869, farmer, containing recipes, miscellaneous notes, and accounts of farming and contracting business in Clinton and Montgomery Counties, Indiana, 1831-1869; a journal kept by Indiana legislator John Work Hutchings regarding his work as timber cutter, farmer, and contractor for the construction of the Fort Wayne and Southern Railroad Company, 1847-1862; three diaries of Thomas J. Griffith, 1858, 1859, 1865; journal of Martha E. (Hutchings) Griffith containing diaries, 1863-1881, obstetrical case histories, medical office accounts, 1871, and correspondence, 1866-1868; letters from Solon Tilford, physician, to Martha E. (Hutchings) Griffith and medical lecture notes, 1865-1866; lecture notes of Thomas J. Griffith at the department of medicine and surgery, University of Michigan, 1865-1866, and at the Miami Medical College, Cincinnati, Ohio, 1866-1867; medical account book of Thomas J. Griffith, Darlington, Indiana, 1867-1874; notes of Martha E. (Hutchings) Griffith on a course of lectures delivered by Dr. Benjamin Joy Jeffries on diseases of the skin, 1867; clinical notes of Martha E.
