Background

Biographical / Historical:

Edith Marian Grossman was born on 22 March 1936 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to Alexander and Sally (Stern) Dorph. She received her B.A. and M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania; completed graduate study at the University of California, Berkeley from 1960–1962; and completed her Ph.D. at New York University in 1972. She was awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, 1961–1962, and a Fulbright fellowship, 1962–1963. Grossman has translated more than sixty books from Spanish to English, including an award-winning translation of Cervantes' Don Quixote.

Scope and Content:

The Grossman mss., 1970–2008, includes correspondence, uncorrected and corrected proofs, typescripts, manuscript notes, drafts, subject files, reviews, and clippings.

TRANSLATIONS consists of translations of works by Eliseo Alberto, Fernando Arrabal, Alfredo Bermuda, Miguel de Cervantes, Jose Donoso, Roberto Echavarren, Carlos Fuentes, Gustavo Gac-Artigas, Gabriel García Márquez, Isaac Goldemberg, Luis de Góngora, Enrique Krauze, Carmen Laforet, Plinio Apuleyo Mendoza, Antonio Muñoz Molina, Mayra Montero, Augusto Monterroso, Alvaro Mutis, Julio Ortega, Manuel Puig, Julián Ríos, Santiago Roncagliolo, Manuel Scorza, Jacobo Timerman, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Irene Vilar-Cuperman. ADDITIONS consists of additional translations. ADDITIONS II consists of additional translations as well as drafts of Why Translation Matters, Ata Source: A Translator's Odyssey through Letters and Loves, Reader's Report of Carlos Fuentes, and essays for Contemporary World Writers. ADDITIONS III consists of reviews, events and interviews, teaching materials, professional files, and additional translations.
