Background

Biographical / Historical:

Joshua Barker Hadley (1808-1831) was born in Chatham County, North Carolina. He married Mary Thompson (1808-1880) in Orange County, North Carolina, on 13 October 1825, and they moved to Hendricks County, Indiana, in 1826. They had four children: Martha (1826-1902), Edith (1828-1865), Abner (1828-1893), and Albert (1831-1866).

Joshua B. Hadley was interested in the Lancasterian Plan, a system of free public schooling based on peer tutoring, which had been developed by fellow Quaker Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838). Hadley died suddenly in 1831, leaving his wife to care for their four young children. His wife's obituary states that, due to her Quaker faith, "although she passed through many trials and hardships, being left a widow when young, with four small children, in a new and forest county, yet she was patient through all, never murmuring at her hard lot."

The Hadleys' grandson Joshua (1864-1941), a farmer, married Bertha Wiley (1866-1944) in 1891. Before they married, Bertha worked as a schoolteacher.

Scope and Content:

The Hadley, J. mss., 1823-1891, consists of Joshua B. Hadley's book of notes on the Lancasterian Plan, 1823; three teacher's licenses to teach in Hendricks County, Indiana, issued to Bertha Wiley between 1888 and 1891; two of Bertha Wiley's notebooks from her time as a student at the Danville Normal School; a penmanship notebook of Joshua Hadley; a manuscript copy of the Salem Lyceum, a school paper; and a few newspaper clippings.
