Background

Biographical / Historical:

Knox County, the first county in the Northwest Territory, was named for Henry Knox, 1750-1806, the second U.S. Secretary of War. When it was established in 1790, Knox County extended to Canada and encompassed much of present-day Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, and Ohio. Additional counties were established later, reducing the size of Knox County to its current state by 1818. The county seat is Vincennes.

Harrison Township, located in Knox County and founded in 1801, was named for General William Henry Harrison, 1773-1841.

Scope and Content:

The Harrison Township, Knox County, Indiana mss., 1796-1888, consists principally of official records, 1808-1888, of Harrison Township, but other records, 1796-1874, of Knox County are included.

Bound volumes in the collection contain the following Harrison Township records: Minutes and records of the trustees, 1846-1859, 1853-1867, 1878-1880; an enumeration of white male inhabitants over the age of 21 years, 1866; Paupers' records, 1866-1885; Teachers' contracts and reports to the township trustee, 1866-1875; Oaths of office of directors of school districts, 1877-1884; and Receipts and expenditures of schools, 1874-1888.

Among the records of Knox County generally not of Harrison Township exclusively, are some, 1825-1852, relating to the Knox County Seminary and Vincennes University. These are unbound. Included is an etching of James Douglas Williams, 1808-1880, governor of Indiana, and a caricature of him by Ray Brenner "from impressions gleaned from Indianapolis Journal, September 7, 1876."

Some of the mss. in this collection are in a folio folder.
