Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Barbara Harshav, 1940-, was born on 17 September 1940. She completed her A.B. at the University of California at Los Angeles in 1962, her M.A. at the University of Wisconsin in 1965, and further graduate studies at the University of California at Berkeley in 1967. Between 1964 and 1975, she taught history at the Tuskegee Institute, San Francisco State University, North Carolina Central University, and Federal City College. In 1978, she started translating German, Yiddish, Hebrew, and French works into English. In the 1980s, she completed work for Yad Vashem and the YIVO Institute. She joined the comparative literature faculty at Yale University in 2000.
- Scope and Content:
The Harshav mss., 1993-2001, consists of correspondence and drafts of volumes translated from Hebrew into English by Barbara Harshav. Present is correspondence with Michal Govrin relating to Harshav's translation of his The Name [ha-Shem], as well as the final translation manuscript (New York: Riverhead, 1998), and three drafts of her translation of Haim Be'er's The Pure Element of Time [Havalim] published by the University Press of New England in 2003.
