Background
- Biographical / Historical:
A representative figure of British poetry in the 1950s, John Heath-Stubbs was a powerful and prolific poet and translator who left over 30 poetry collections and numerous translations of both modern and classical poetry.
He is known for refined, allusive poems influenced by Romanticism and Classicism. He was interested in classical and British mythology, as can be seen in his 1972 Artorius, an Arthurian epic. He translated works from a variety of classical and modern languages, including works by Sappho, Horace, Catullus, Hafiz, Verlaine, and Giacomo Leopardi. In 1973 he was awarded the Queen's Medal for poetry and in 1989 was made OBE. Heath-Stubbs had bad eyesight from childhood, which progressively worsened over the course of his life until he was blind.
A biographical sketch of Heath-Stubbs may be found in Contemporary Authors, vol. 13-14.
