Biographical / Historical:

Everett Burton Helm, 1913-1999, was an American author and composer.

Helm was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, July 17, 1913; earned his B.A. in 1934 from Carleton College and his M.A. and Ph.D. at Harvard in 1936 and 1939 respectively. He later studied composition with Gian Francesco Malipiero and Ralph Vaughan Williams, and musicology with Alfred Einstein. He married artist Elizabeth Albee in August 1955.

Helm taught music and lectured at various colleges and universities in the United States and Europe until 1968. He moved permanently to Europe in 1950 and has lived in Italy since 1963. His writings are chiefly music reviews, but he has also published several monographs including works on Bela Bartok, Franz Liszt, and Pyotr Illyich Tchaikovsky.

Scope and Content:

The Helm mss. II, ca. 1948-1981, consist of letters, writings, music compositions, and tape recordings of author, composer, Everett Burton Helm, 1913-1999.

The correspondence in the collection is primarily with music publishers, periodicals, and newspapers. Also present are typescripts and notes of many of his articles and reviews, etc.; clippings of the same or of subjects of interest to him; and tape recordings of music performances, including of his own composition Die Belagerung von Tottenburg and of several Malipiero works. Original music manuscripts, some in parts, for titles by Everett Helm complete the collection.

Later accessions saw the addition of several more music manuscripts, Helm's diaries, photographs, and Helm's dissertation.
