Background

Biographical / Historical:

Jacob Hauser was born in 1793 in Salem, North Carolina, the son of Abraham and Maria Hauser. In 1821, he married Nancy Ellen Sims, 1803-1899, in Bartholomew County, Indiana. The couple had 9 children together. Two of Jacob's sons fought in the Civil War. Jacob's brother, Rev. Martin Hauser, founded Hope, Indiana in Bartholomew County in 1830.

Scope and Content:

The Houser mss., 1855-1863, consists of letters of the family of Jacob Houser, died 1863, founder of Hope, Indiana. They are principally Civil War letters, 1861-1863, from Francis Pidgeon Houser and Clave [Cleveland] Houser, sons of Jacob Houser and soldiers in Co. B., 17th regiment, Indiana infantry, to members of their family and friends. Included also is correspondence of Larkin N. Houser, another son of Jacob Houser, who was in school in Hartsville, Indiana, with his father, and his sisters, Mrs. Katharine Medora (Houser) Quick, and Mrs. Laetitia (Houser) Spurgeon; and a letter, August 13, 1863, from Martin Houser, founder of West Salem, Illinois, to his niece on the death of her father, Jacob Houser.
