Background

Biographical / Historical:

Morton Craig Hunter, 1825-1896, was born in Versailles, Indiana. He graduated from the law school at Indiana University in 1849. In 1858, he was elected to the Indiana state legislature. In 1862, he was commissioned colonel of the 82nd Indiana Infantry in the Civil War. During the Battle of Chickamauga, his initiative in holding Snodgrass Hill/Horseshoe Ridge saved the Union Army from total destruction. He also took part in Sherman's March to the Sea. He was brevetted brigadier general of volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he served four terms in the US House of Representatives, from 1867 to 1869 and from 1873 to 1879. He then opened the Hunter Valley Limestone quarry in Bloomington, Indiana.
