John George Jackson, 1777-1825, was an American congressman and jurist. He was born September 2, 1777, near Buckhannon, Virginia (now West Virginia), the eldest son of George and Elizabeth (von Brake) Jackson. The family moved to Clarksburg, Virginia in 1784. In 1797 Jackson was appointed surveyor of public lands in what is now Ohio and represented Harrison County in the Virginia House of Burgesses from 1798-1801. In 1801, he married Mary Payne, a daughter of John Payne and sister of Dolley Madison. He served as a United States congressman from March 4, 1803 to September 28, 1810, and from March 4, 1813 to March 3, 1817. In 1809 he fought a duel with North Carolina congressman Joseph Pearson, after which Jackson resigned and was succeeded in Congress by William McKinley. Following the death of first wife, he married Mary Meigs, daughter of Return Jonathan Meigs, Jr., on September 13, 1810. Jackson was a member of the Virginia House of Delegates from 1811-1812, and was appointed brigadier general of the Virginia Militia in 1812. Later he was appointed first U. S. district judge for western Virginia, a position which he held from 1819 until his death on March 28, 1825.
