Background

Biographical / Historical:

Richard Lieber, 1869-1944, was the director of the Indiana State Department of Conservation, 1919-1933.

Scope and Content:

The Lieber Committee mss., 1955, are letters and papers relating to Richard Lieber, 1869-1944. They have been accumulated by an Indiana University Committee appointed for the purpose of having a biography of Lieber written and published.

In the collection is a letter to John Donald Barnhart, chairman of the committee, from Wood Posey, June 22, 1955, a paper "Notes on Colonel Richard Lieber" by Charles Goodwin Sauers, and "Recollections of Some Early Incidents in the Acquisitions of Indiana State Parks" by Leo M. Rappaport.

Also included are English translations from the German of the Richard Lieber diaries, 1909-1916, made by Kurt Blohm in the spring of 1955, and typescripts of the 1916 and 1917 diaries made in the summer of 1955 by Marion Lloyd Rappe. The typescript of the 1916 diary substitutes Blohm's translation for the German in the original.
