Background

Biographical / Historical:

Frederic Gershom Melcher was an American publisher, editor, and bookseller. In 1910, he married Marguerite Fellows, author of children's books, plays, and Americana. Nicholas Vachel Lindsay was an American poet. He grew up in Springfield, Illinois, and studied medicine at Hiram College in Ohio, leaving to study at the Art Institute of Chicago and the New York School of Art. He then turned to poetry as a means of income. Vachel married Elizabeth Conner on May 19, 1925, in Spokane, Washington. Elizabeth was the daughter of a Presbyterian clergyman, and graduated from Mills College in Oakland, California. Elizabeth was a poetry critic and served as headmistress of Oxford School for Girls in Hartford, Connecticut. In 1931, due to financial stress and poor health, Vachel committed suicide.

Olive Lindsay, sister of Vachel, graduated from Hiram College in 1901. She married Arthur Paul Wakefield in 1904 with whom she traveled to China as missionaries for the Disciples of Christ. Olive also presented and performed her brother's plays after his death.

Scope and Content:

The letters relate to Lindsay's writings, lectures, friends, personal and family affairs, and biographies.

Also included in the collection are copies of Lindsay's "Manifesto: the new poem games with a word about the Spencerian games," January 6, 1927; "Announcement of a programme of poem-games and dramas for impromptu actors at the Little Theatre"; "The western bookseller convention"; Frederic Gershom Melcher's "Vachel Lindsay: an account of a friendship recorded from memoirs," August 1957; and Mrs. Olive (Lindsay) Wakefield's "Vachel Lindsay and the American Soul: notes for the talks I gave to many colleges from 1935-'44."

For the printed letters see Doris M. Reed, "Letters of Vachel Lindsay in the Lilly Library at Indiana University," in the Indiana University Bookman, December, 1960: pp. 21-63.
