Background

Biographical / Historical:

Lee Nichols, 1915-2011, was a journalist for the Voice of America African Division. He received a B.A. in journalism and an M.A. in International Relations from American University in Washington, D.C. From 1963-1985, he worked for the African Division of Voice of America (VOA), which was then part of the United States Information Agency. The USIA, which existed from 1953-1999, conducted soft diplomacy overseas via information programs like VOA's radio programming. Nichols' work for VOA included radio programs on African universities, African authors, and African scientists. For the African writers series, interviews for which began in 1973, Nichols spoke with 83 African authors from mostly Anglophone countries. Most of the interviews present in this collection were broadcast as a Voice of America series during the summer of 1975.

Note on Indexing Term – "Literature—Translating": Portions of the authors' vernacular works were translated into English for purposes of the radio program.
