Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Perlzweig mss., 1952-1956 contains correspondence between poet/translator Cid Corman (1924-2004) and long-time friend and archaeologist Judith Perzlweig. Born in Boston, Corman studied at Boston Latin School and Tufts University. He later studied at the University of Michigan and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for graduate work. Corman later became known as a poet throughout his life, as well as a translator of Japanese poetry. Stylistically, Corman is also frequently associated with the Beat Generation and objectivism.

Scope and Content:

The Perlzweig mss., 1952-1956, consist of letters from poet/translator Cid Corman, 1924-2004, to long-time friend, archaeologist Judith Perlzweig. In 1952 Corman is writing from Dorchester, Massachusetts to Perlzweig, first in Durham, North Carolina, then later and for the remainder of the correspondence in Athens, Greece. In fall 1954 Corman moves to Paris, until February 1956 when he takes up a job at the British School in Bari, Italy, and writes to her from there. The letters concern his everyday activities, but in particular his writings and the publication of Origin, as well as the movements of mutual friends and acquaintances.
