Background

Biographical / Historical:

The Pike mss., 2002-2003 contains the translations of Comparative Literature Professor and translator Burton Pike (1930-). As a young man, Pike studied at Haverford College as an undergraduate, and Harvard University for his PhD. He then taught at various higher learning institutions throughout the United States, including Cornell University, Queens College, CUNY, and Yale University. Pike is known for his translations of works by Robert Musil and other German authors. He is also the recipient of Guggenheim and Fulbright fellowships.

Scope and Content:

The Pike mss., circa 2002-2003, consist of the translations from German into English made by Burton Pike, 1930- , Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature at The City University of New York (CUNY) Graduate Center. Present are drafts, the copy-edited manuscript, and galleys for Goethe's Sorrows of Young Werther (New York: Random House, 2004).
