Biographical / Historical:

Coella Lindsay Ricketts, 1859-1941, was a renowned calligrapher and illuminator of Chicago, Illinois. Ricketts founded The Scriptorium, a firm specializing in calligraphy and illuminations, in 1885.

Scope and Content:

The collection is divided into three parts: 1) reproductions being photostats and other types of reproductions of medieval manuscripts and leaves in European and New York libraries and notes by Ricketts on medieval manuscripts in European and New York libraries, on press marks, and on gold leaf; 2) miscellaneous, including tracings of pages of manuscripts in European libraries; photostats, tracings, stencils, and metal plates of letters of the alphabet; examples of diplomas made by The Scriptorium, a firm specializing in calligraphy and illuminations which was founded by Ricketts in Chicago in 1885; a manuscript by L.J. Chassee, "Digest of book written by Balderici Horicquoi consisting of script and pen paintings"; a bound account book, 1900-1902; a bound volume of "Outside diploma orders" of The Scriptorium, 1892-1912; and clippings for a calligraphy bibliography, and 3) oversize files and items, including alphabet tracings, reproductions and photographs.
