Background

Biographical / Historical:

Vilas Sarang, considered to be one of the most significant modernist Marathi writers, was born in 1942 in Karwar on the west coast of India. He went on to study at Elphinstone College, complete a Ph.D. in English at Bombay University, and complete a Ph.D. in comparative literature at Indiana University in 1974. He taught English at the University of Basra in Iraq in the 1970s, at Bombay University in the 1980s, and at Kuwait University in the 1990s. Writing in both English and Marathi, Sarang published several books of literary criticism, poetry, short fiction, and novels. He passed away on 14 April 2015.

Scope and Content:

The Dinosaur Ship series contains all drafts and materials relating to the novel. The Fair Tree of the Void includes all drafts and materials relating to the stories in the collection. In the Land of Enki includes all drafts and materials related to the novel. Short Stories includes drafts of Sarang's short stories. Novels includes drafts and other materials of Sarang's other novels. Essays includes criticism from Sarang regarding translation, poetry, grammar, and linguistics. Translations includes Sarang's translations of various works to and from English and Marathi. Correspondence with Breon Mitchell includes Sarang's long term correspondence to the IU professor regarding various issues of publications, translations, and other academic matters. Publishers correspondence includes those with various publishers about the state of Sarang's works. Misc. Correspondence includes all other correspondence from Sarang to other universities, professors, writers, etc. Miscellaneous includes other items like clippings, reviews, notes, magazines, and journals.
