Marian Schwartz, 1951-, was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on 2 May 1951. She studied Russian at Harvard University, Middlebury Russian School, and Leningrad State University before completing an M.A. in Slavic Languages and Literatures at the University of Texas (1975). She then spent two years working as an assistant editor for Praeger Publishers in New York City before deciding to transition to freelance work. She published Landmarks, her first literary translation, in 1978, and has since published translations of works by Nina Berberova, Mikhail Bulgakov, Polina Dashkova, Ruben Gonzales Gallego, Andrei Gelasimov, Dmitry Glukhovsky, Ivan Goncharov, Mikhail Lermontov, Yuri Olesha, Vasily Peskov, Ludmila Petrushevskaya, Edvard Radzinsky, Mikhail Shishkin, Olga Slavnikova, Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, Leo Tolstoy, Eugene Vodolazkin, Solomon Volkov, and Leonid Yuzefovich. She has received numerous accolades, including two National Endowment for the Arts translation awards, for her work. Schwartz lives in Austin, Texas.
