Background

Biographical / Historical:

Richard Woodward Seaver, 1926–2009, was born in Watertown, Connecticut, on December 31, 1926. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, Seaver was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to France, studying at the Sorbonne in Paris in the early 1950s while he wrote his dissertation on James Joyce. It was there that he met his wife, Jeannette Medina, whom he married in 1953. Seaver worked at Grove Press through the 1970s and then founded his own imprint at Viking before launching Arcade Publishing in 1988. He became an important American translator, editor, and publisher who defied censorship and was instrumental in bringing works by Samuel Beckett, Henry Miller, the Marquis de Sade, William Burroughs, Jean Genet, D. H. Lawrence, Jack Kerouac, Octavio Paz, and Eugéne Ionesco, among others, to the attention of American readers. He died in Manhattan, New York, on January 5, 2009.

Acquisition information:
Purchase: 2009, 2011, 2012
Processing information:

Processed by Sarah Petras, under the supervision of Kyra Triebold. Completed in 2023.

Arrangement:

The collection is arranged into the following series: I. CORRESPONDENCE, II. PROJECT FILES, III. BUSINESS, IV. PERSONAL. These series were mostly created based on the original order of the collection with some changes made to organize documents chronologically when possible. Some documents were also grouped together within subseries for ease of reference.

While many of Seaver's personal financial documents were grouped within the PERSONAL series, those pertainining to his work for Grove Press remained in the BUSINESS series under the title "Financials: Richard Seaver" to avoid dividing relevant Grove Press documentation. Finally, there are several letters signed by Austryn Wainhouse in this collection, but given as they pertain heavily to the translation and publication of "The Marquis de Sade", they are located under the PROJECT FILES series within the "Sade" files.
