Background

Biographical / Historical:

Manuel Joaquín Uriarte, SJ, 1720-1802, was a Jesuit priest and missionary. He was born in Zurbano, Spain on September 14, 1720. After beginning his studies in Seville, he entered the Society of Jesus in 1738. In 1743, he traveled to Quito, Ecuador, to work as a missionary. He continued to study philosophy and theology in Ecuador, and he was ordained a priest in 1747. In 1750, he was sent to the province of Mainas to continue his missionary work. The Mainas region, which includes modern Ecuador and northern Peru, takes its name from the Maina people, the first indigineous group in the upper Amazon region to be evangelized by the Jesuits. Uriarte kept a diary of his mission work, which was later published as Diario de un misionero de Mainas. After the expulsion of the Jesuits from Ecuador in 1767, Uriarte lived in Ravenna, Italy until 1798. He died in 1802.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of Uriarte's two-volume diary and correspondence. The materials formerly belonged to collector Antonio Graiño. They were used by Father Constantino Bayle, S.J., when he edited and published the diary as Diario de un misionero de Mainas (Madrid, Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas, Instituto Santo Toribio de Mogrovejo, 1952, BX3705 .U76).

The correspondence has not been published in full, but Bayle did refer to and quote from several of the letters. Most of the correspondence is from Uriarte to his brothers Jose Agustin and Juan Fernando and to his sister Maria Francisca. Some of the correspondence from Italy was unsigned but Bayle attributes it to Uriarte. Another group of letters appears to be from Jose Agustin to Maria Francisca in the year 1776.

The correspondents in the collection are Francisco Alvarez; Pedro de Calatayud; Andres Camacho; Segundo Antonio del Castillo; Joachim Hedel; Martin Xavier Iriarte; Angel Maria Manca; Marcos Matheus; Jeronimo Mendez; Tomas Pesantes y Coronel; Pedro Schoeneman; Placido de Segura; Luis Fernando de Toledo y Vivero; Manuel Joaquin Uriarte; Jose Agustin de Uriarte y Baquedano; and Andre de Zarate.
