- Biographical / Historical:
The Viking Press, 1925-1975 , was an American publishing company. It was founded in New York City by Harold K. Guinzburg and George S. Oppenheim on March 1, 1925. The Press was known for its publication of prominent authors of fiction, non-fiction, and play scripts, including author Upton Sinclair's works. In 1933, Viking Press founded its Junior Books department to publish children's books. Among its most famous titles are The Story of Ferdinand (1936), Make Way for Ducklings (1941), and Corduroy (1968). In 1975, Viking Press was acquired by the Penguin Group.
- Scope and Content:
The papers in this collection relate to those books of Upton Sinclair which the Viking Press published during the years 1940-1956, including his Lanny Budd series (1940-1953), an edition of The Jungle (1946), Another Pamela (1950), and The Enemy Had It Too (1950). Subjects include the writing, publication, sale, foreign language rights, motion picture rights, use on radio and television, reviews, etc., of these books.
Most of the correspondence is between Benjamin W. Huebsch for the Viking Press and Upton Beall Sinclair. Other correspondents include Louis Kaufman Anspacher, Lewis Browne, Sheridan Downey, George Sherwood Eddy, Morris Leopold Ernst, Marc Tiffany Greene, Emanuel Haldeman-Julius, Adolf Keller, Thomas Mann, Herbert Stanley Morrison, Jawaharlal Nehru, Samuel Kerkham Ratcliffe, Mrs. Margaret (Higgins) Sanger, Mrs. Charlotte Frances (Payne-Townshend) Shaw, Robert Emmet Sherwood, Raymond Gram Swing, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Walter Winchell.
