Background

Biographical / Historical:

Sir Philip Warwick, 1609-1683, was a British writer and politician. He was born on December 24, 1609, the son of Thomas Warwick, the organist of Westminster Abbey. After studying at Eton College, he spent some time traveling in France and Switzerland. In 1640, Warwick was elected to the "Long Parliament," and during the English Civil War (1642–1651) he supported Charles I. Warwick is best known for his work Memoirs of the Reign of King Charles I (1701) which drew on his close personal relationship with the king. During the Commonwealth period, Warwick remained loyal to Charles II and was knighted by him in 1660. In 1661, Warwick became a member of Parliament, representing Westminster, and from 1660 to 1667 he served as secretary to the Treasury. He died on January 15, 1683.

Warwick had one son also named Philip Warwick, 1640-1683. The younger Warwick was appointed envoy to Sweden in 1680. However, after returning to England upon the death of his father, he died on March 12, 1683.
