Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Michael Wigglesworth, 1631-1705, was a clergyman whose poem The Day of Doom was a bestseller in early New England.
- Scope and Content:
The Wigglesworth mss., 1656-1762, include two personal letters, February 11, 1690, and March 23, 1691 (incomplete) from Michael Wigglesworth, 1631-1705, clergyman, to Mrs. Sybil (Sparhawk) Avery, -1708?, who became his third wife, in which he advances his prospects with her. These letters were first published in the Christian Register for June 1, 1850, and later in the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, Vol. 17, 1863, pages 139-142 (F1 .N455). The third letter, June 25, 1656, from Jonathan Mitchell, 1624-1668, clergyman, is the usual letter of dismissal at that time for Michael Wigglesworth from the Cambridge church to the Church of Christ at Malden. With the letters is an undated autobiographical account by Michael Wigglesworth. The autobiography and the Mitchell letter are both published in the Christian Register for June 29, 1850, with the autobiography also being published in the NEH & G Register for 1863, pages 137-139. The fourth letter, September 29, 1762, from Stephen Sewall, 1734-1804, Hebraist, is to Edward Wigglesworth, 1693-1765, theologian and son of Michael Wigglesworth, in which he asks permission to visit his daughter "with a view to compass the End proposed in such Cases." Stephen Sewall married Rebecca Wigglesworth on August 9, 1763.
