Biographical / Historical:

Career of Rudolph Williams: entered Company K, August 12, 1862, at the age of 18; appointed to sergeant major, February 6, 1863; to second lieutenant in Company A, February 9, 1863; to first lieutenant, March 3, 1864, but not mustered; detailed as ordnance officer in 23rd army corps, July 23, 1863; mustered out with regiment, June 27, 1865, Salisbury, North Carolina.

Career of William H. Rudulph, cousin of Rudolph Williams: entered Company K, August 12, 1862, at the age of 21; appointed corporal, September 6, 1862; discharged, November 18, 1862, at Bowling Green, Kentucky, on surgeon's certificate of disability; re-entered service, August 18, 1863, as a member of the Ohio Heavy Artillery, 2nd regiment, which was mustered out on August 23, 1865, at Nashville, Tennessee.

The letters contain comments on army officers and other prominent persons among them being Henry T. Bissell, John Randolph Bond, Moses Randolph Brailey, Abrose Everett Burnside, John Watson Foster, Ulysses Simpson Grant, Andrew Johnson, Abraham Lincoln, John Hunt Morgan, William Starke Rosecrans, John McAllister Schofield, William Tecumseh Sherman and Joseph Wheeler.

Other subjects discussed are federal and Ohio elections, 1863-1864; the whiskey tax, 1864; Morgan's Raid, 1863; Negroes in the Civil War; a visit of Williams to New Albany, Indiana, 1863; the second regiment, Ohio Heavy Artillery; the 111th regiment, Ohio Infantry; Ohio and federal politics, 1864; slavery in the southern states, 1862; army rations, supplies and stores, 1863-1864; and hospitals, transportation, and economic aspects of the Civil War.
