Background

Biographical / Historical:

William Carlos Williams, 1883-1963, was an American playwright, essayist, novelist, medical doctor, and poet best known for his contributions to the Imagist movement.

Scope and Content:

At least five of the letters contain poems composed by Williams about the time the letter was written. Also present are three letters Williams wrote to his mother, Raquel Helene Rose (Hoheb) Williams, 1847-1949, in 1910, 1915, and 1916; one letter to his older son William written in 1931; and one to his younger son Paul in 1953.

Letters from Florence Williams to her husband are present for the period September 1927-June 1928 when she took their two sons to Europe for a year of schooling. An undated letter from poet Nancy Clara Cunard to Florence Williams, probably from the late 1920's, completes the collection.
