Abstract:
The Williams, W.C. mss. III, 1884-1995, consist of letters to poet William Carlos Williams, 1883-1963, and his wife, Florence (Herman) Williams, 1890-1976, from their son William Eric Williams, 1914-1995, most of which were written while William Eric was in the armed forces, and of letters to Florence Williams, or to Williams' publisher at New Directions Press, James Laughlin, 1914- , pertaining to requests for Williams material by editors and researchers. Also included are a number of condolence cards and letters sent after Williams' death.

Background

Biographical / Historical:

William Carlos Williams, 1883-1963, was an American playwright, essayist, novelist, medical doctor, and poet best known for his contributions to the Imagist movement.

Scope and Content:

Present in the collection are drafts of poems and other works by Williams, as well as writings about him; photographs of Williams and his family; publication contracts, 1951-1981; and Williams' journal for the period January-June 1924 when he and his wife traveled to Europe. Also included are papers relating to the Museum of Art of Ogunquit; "William Carlos Williams and the American Scene," an exhibit held at the Whitney Museum of American Art; and the television program "Voices and Visions." Memorials, newspapers, reviews, and miscellaneous complete the collection.
