Background

Biographical / Historical:

Cary A. Wooley was born in Ripley County, Indiana, in 1839? and enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War on August 10, 1862. He served with Co. B, 68th regt., Indiana Infantry in Kentucky and Tennessee and at Camp Dumont, Indianapolis, Indiana, in 1862 and 1863. On February 15, 1864, he was transferred to Co. I, 5th regt., U.S. Veteran Reserve Corps and assigned to guarding prisoners at Camp Morton and Camp Burnside, Indianapolis, where he remained until his discharge.

The Wooley mss., 1862-1865, comprise a collection of Civil War letters; a diary, January 1-July 11, 1865, and the discharge, July 5, 1865, of Cary A. Wooley, who was born in Ripley County, Indiana, in 1839? and enlisted on August 10, 1862. The letters are addressed to his father, William Wooley, his mother, Mrs. Nancy Wooley, his sister, Mrs. Martha Jane (Wooley) Shaw, and her husband, C.T. Shaw.

Also included are a few letters from relatives of Cary A. Wooley, who were in the service. Among these are two letters from C. T. Shaw, one being from Resaca, Georgia, May 27, 1864, to Mr. and Mrs. William Wooley, the other to his wife and children from Charlotte, North Carolina, June 22, 1865; three letters from Alfred M. Wooley to his cousin, Mrs. Martha Jane (Wooley) Shaw, from Chattanooga, Tennessee, July 17, 1864, and May 14, l865, and from Bridgeport, Alabama, Oct. 23, 1864; and one from William B. Wooley to C.T. Shaw from Nashville, Tennessee, March 16, 1863.
