Background

Biographical / Historical:

Ross Lockridge (1914-1948) was born on April 25, 1914 in Bloomington, Indiana. The family moved to Fort Wayne for several years, but later returned to Bloomington. Lockridge attended Indiana University in Bloomington, where he was known for his impressive academic record. In 1937, he married Vernice Baker and together the couple had four children, Ernest, Jeanne, Ross, and Lawrence. Lockridge died on March 6, 1948 in Bloomington, Indiana, several weeks after the publication of Raintree County. The novel was his only book.

Francis Ernest Wylie, 1905-?, was a journalist.

Scope and Content:

The Wylie, F. mss., 1946-1948, 1969-1974, and 1989-1991, consist primarily of letters from Ross Lockridge, 1914-1948, author, to Francis Ernest Wylie, 1905-?, journalist. Also present are copies of Wylie's memos to editors at Life and Time regarding an article on Lockridge and his forthcoming book, Raintree County, and a note from Wylie's father shortly after Lockridge's death. The 1989 letters are two from Ross Lockridge's son, Laurence, to Francis Wylie concerning Wylie's file of Lockridge materials, and the 1990-1991 letters are from Francis Wylie to William Rae Cagle of the Lilly Library in which Wylie describes his relationship with Lockridge and the circumstances surrounding this file.

A typescript, "Three Flashbacks from RAINTREE COUNTY by Ross Lockridge, Jr.," and a few other writings relating to Raintree County complete the collection.
