Background
- Biographical / Historical:
Born in Strasbourg, France on July 14, 1946, Joris was raised in Ettelbruck, Luxembourg. He left Luxembourg at nineteen, and has lived all over the world. He has worked as a visiting scholar at the University of California, San Diego and in the department of English at the University of Albany. He now lives in Brooklyn. Joris is a prolific writer and has published over twenty books and chapbooks of his poetry. He has also published numerous translations, essays, and anthologies. He has twice been the recipient of PEN awards for translation and in 2003 was the Berlin Prize Fellow at the American Academy in Berlin. The author of over forty books, Joris is also considered to be one of the foremost translators of avant-garde poetry into both French and English, most notably the works of Paul Celan.

The Correspondence series includes correspondence with publishers, fellow authors and translators, family, and friends. Correspondence is arranged alphabetically by individual last name, followed by general correspondence listed from A-Z. Creative Works is divided into Collaborations with Rothenberg, Anthologies, Celan Translations, Other Translations, Poetry, Writing, Editing, Composition Books, Sixpack (a magazine of poetry), and Miscellaneous. The series consists of poetry and prose by Joris as well as his translations and work on anthologies and publications. Of particular interest are Joris's translations of the work of Paul Celan and Poems for the Millennium, co-edited with Jerome Rothenberg.

The Personal series consists of a small amount of largely biographical materials. Clippings contain newspaper clippings of interest to Joris. Audio-Visual Materials contain two CD-ROMS, one floppy disk, and one photograph. The Promotional Materials series contains flyers and a newspaper clipping advertising various readings, performances, and exhibits. The Publication Materials include both published and personal criticism of Joris' and solicitations of poetry submissions, translations, and other works. The Creative Works by Others series is made up of poems and prose by other poets and authors.
