John Tabb DuVal (1940- ) was born in Pennsylvania and earned his A.B. in English from Franklin and Marshall College in Lancaster. He went on to earn an M.A. in English from the University of Pennsylvania and an M.A. in French, an M.F.A. in Translation, and a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from the University of Arkansas. He has been a professor of English, Creative Writing, and Literary Translation at the University of Arkansas since 1982, and until 2008 he directed the University's Program in the latter. DuVal has published 13 books translating Old French, Modern French, Romanesco, and Italian works into English, including Tales of Trilussa, which won the American Academy of Poet's 2006 Raissiz/de Palchi Award for best book of translations from Italy. He was named a Fulbright College Visiting Fellow to Wolfson College of Cambridge University for the 2010-2011 academic year to complete his translation of The Song of Roland, which was published by Hackett in 2012. John Tabb DuVal's daughter Kathleen DuVal co-edited Interpreting a Continent: Voices from Colonial America with her father, and currently works as a professor of history at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
