Background

Biographical / Historical:

Anthony H. Chambers, international scholar and translator of Japanese literature received his Bachelor's degree from Pomono College in California. From there he went on to receive a graduate degree from International Christian University (Tokyo), Stanford University, the Inter-University Center for Japanese Language Study (Tokyo), and the University of Michigan where he received his PhD. He is most known for his translations of Japanese author Jun'ichiro Tanizaki's works and Ueda Akinari's Tales of Moonlight and Rain.

Scope and Content:

This collection consists of Anthony H. Chambers' translation notes, publishing correspondence, and reviews for translated Japanese literature. Authors translated include Jun'ichiro Tanizaki, Chomei Kamo, Ueda Akinari, Kanze Motomasa, Tate Shiro, Tatsuhiko Shibusawa, Yukio Mishima, Tsutomu Minakami, Teru Miyamoto, and Keiichiro Hirano. Publishing correspondence includes Alfred a. Knopf publishing and Orion Literature. Correspondence with E.G Seidensticker and Paul McCarthy is also included.

The Tanizaki stories deal with disturbing themes including necrophilia, incest, and sexual violence against children.
