Background

Biographical / Historical:

Nicholas Robert Michael de Lange was born on August 7, 1944 in Nottingham, England. He has a B.A. and D. Phil. from Oxford University and is a Professor of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at Cambridge University. He is a translator of modern Hebrew literature and the author of several books on Jewish culture and history.

Scope and Content:

This collection relates primarily to de Lange's translations from Hebrew into English of the works of Israeli author Amos Oz.

The Correspondence series includes letters exchanged between de Lange and Oz, as well as printouts of emails and other general correspondence.

The Translations of Amos Oz series consists of correspondence, drafts, proofs, and reviews relating to de Lange's translation of several works by Amos Oz. Some printed material about Oz himself are also included.

The Translation of A.B. Yehoshua series includes correspondence, drafts, proofs, and reviews relating to de Lange's translation of Yehoshua's book A Journey to the End of the Millennium, which won the Koret Jewish Book Award in 2000.

Additions includes correspondence and drafts relating to de Lange's translation of a few works by S. Yizhar, including his novel Khirbet Khizeh and his book Preliminaries. Materials relating to de Lange's translation of several other works by Amos Oz, including his autobiographical novel A Tale of Love and Darkness, are also included.
