Background

Biographical / Historical:

Robert E. Skinner, 1948-, earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Old Dominion University in 1970 and a Master's of Library Science degree from Indiana University, Bloomington in 1977. He was the University Librarian at Xavier University of Louisiana for 26 years. He also worked at other libraries during his career and was a fiction and non-fiction writer. He contributed research and publications to subject areas including computer searching and research, library technical service guides, bibliographies, and literary critique. His fiction writing includes poetry, short stories, and several crime and detective novels. Skinner also wrote or co-authored four books about the career of African American writer Chester Hines as well as essays on other authors such as Elmore Leonard and A.B. Guthrie.

Scope and Content:

The Skinner, Robert E. mss., 1966-2013, consist of the scrapbooks, ephemera, theatre programs, and writings of Robert E. Skinner, 1948-. The bulk of the materials are manuscripts and typed drafts of Skinner's books and essays. The collection also includes research Skinner compiled while writing his fiction, signed dinner theater programs when Skinner briefly participated in a theater company in the late 1970s, and scrapbooks created by Skinner, which include certificates and diplomas, newsletters, news clippings, correspondence, diary notes, and cartoons. Some materials focus on his work in medical libraries. Series VII. MISCELLANEOUS. is a single binder which contains certificates, photographs, email correspondence, articles, and other more general materials which have been left in original order.
