Background

Biographical / Historical:

Thomas Binkley was born on December 26, 1931, in Cleveland, Ohio. With a concentration in lute and other medieval instruments, Binkley studied music at the University of Illinois and musicology at the University of Munich in the 1950s. In 1959, he founded the award-winning Studio fur alte Musik (later, Studio der Fruhen Musik) that made recordings of early music performance and toured around the world until 1972. He married Raglind Herrell in Basel, Switzerland, in 1973, and returned to the United States in 1978 to teach music, first at Stanford University and then at Indiana University, where Binkley served as director of th Early Music Institute until his retirement in 1995. Binkley passed away on April 28, 1995, in Bloomington, IN, at the age of 63. Raglind Herrel Binkley, 1940-, created the endowed Binkley Fund through Early Music America in his honor.

Scope and Content:

The Binkley, Raglind mss., 1450-1842, consists of medieval manuscript leaves from prayer books, Bibles, and liturgical books.

Included are: an Arabic/Latin grammar and orthography text, printed in Rome, dated 1650; one leaf of 15th century music from a late medieval liturgical book, presenting the extremely rare Latin chant "Discubuit Jesus" ("Jesus sat"), which is based on Luke 22:14-15 and 19; one leaf from a small 15th century prayer book; one bound missal printed in 1842, Missae Defunctorum Junta Usum Eccesiae cum ordine et canone extensae; and one large manuscript leaf from a Vulgate Bible, Psalm 9, incomplete verses 16-24 (IUXTA Septuaginta).
