Background

Biographical / Historical:

Elisabeth Kaiser was a German translator who notably translated the works of Henry James, William Faulkner, and poet e e cummings (1894-1962).

Edward Estlin Cummings, 1894-1962, was an American poet, author, and playwright. He was born on October 14, 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He graduated from Harvard University with his B.A. in 1915 and his M.A. in 1916. During World War I, Cummings enlisted in a French ambulance service corps. He was detained for a time because of his anti-war sentiment, an experience which influenced his first book The Enormous Room (1922). After the war, Cummings established himself as an avant-garde poet with his poetry collections Tulips and Chimneys (1923) and XLI Poems (1925). He spent the 1920's and 30's traveling throughout Europe, the Soviet Union, Northern Africa and Mexico. In 1932, after separating from his second wife, Cummings met photographer and fashion model Marion Morehouse. They lived together in a common-law marriage until Cummings' death. Over the course of his career, Cummings wrote twelve volumes of poetry, much of which experimented with syntax, punctuation, capitalization, and spacing. He died on September 3, 1962.

Scope and Content:

The early letters relate to Kaiser's translation of The Enormous Room into German, which she worked on with her husband, Helmut M. Braem. Der endlose Raum was published in Stuttgart by Victoria Verlag in 1954. After the book's publication, the letters continue in personal friendship until Cummings' death in 1962. Three of the notes enclose dried leaves: October 6, 1956; September 20, 1957; and undated, October 8. A brief undated note from Marion sometime after Cummings' death and a card from Mrs. Eric Knight [Jere Knight] informing Kaiser of Marion's death and memorial service in June 1969 complete the collection.
