Biographical / Historical:

Paul Vories McNutt, 1891-1955, was a lawyer, governor of Indiana and federal official.

Born, July 19, 1891, at Franklin, Indiana, McNutt received his A.B. at Indiana University in 1913 and his LLB. at Harvard in 1916. He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1914, also serving as an officer in the Field artillery reserve during World War I. McNutt continued on as commanding officer, 326 Field artillery, 1924-1937; member, 5th corps area advisory board, 1927-1934; and was appointed to the faculty of the Indiana University School of Law, 1917. He served as dean from 1925-1933, national commander of the American Legion from 1928-1929, and governor of Indiana from 1933-1937. In addition, McNutt was U.S. high commissioner to the Philippines from 1937-1939 and 1945-1946; ambassador extraordinary and plenipotentiary to the Philippines from 1946-1947; Federal security administrator from 1939-1942; chairman of the War manpower commission from 1942-1945; and partner, McNutt & Nash, New York, and McNutt, Dudley & Easterwood, Washington.

The McNutt mss. II consists of two portrait photographs of Paul V. McNutt, 1891-1955, and Mary Higgins. Both photographs are signed and personally addressed to the recipient, Mary Comer.
