Background

Biographical / Historical:

Juan de Palafox y Mendoza was one of the most interesting and controversial figures to reside in Mexico during the 17th century. Born in 1600, in Fitero, Navarre, Spain, he was the illegitimate but recognized son of Jaime Palafox, the Marques of Ariza. Palafox rose in the service of the Church in Spain through his own abilities and his father's connections. In 1640, he was appointed the Bishop of Puebla, Mexico, with special powers to serve concurrently as a visitador, or special investigator. He was specifically charged with reforming various religious orders that were operating in the area, including Jesuits, Dominicans, and Franciscans.
