Background

Biographical / Historical:

John Johnson, 1942- , is an Associate Professor Emeritus of Folklore at Indiana University. He was born on March 14, 1942 in Abilene, Texas. He received his B.A. from the University of Texas at Austin in 1965, and it was there that he first became interested in folklore. After graduation, he joined the Peace Corps in Somalia. His experiences with Somali poetry inspired him to pursue a master's degree in Somali oral literature from the School of African and Oriental Studies at the University of London, which he received in 1971. His dissertation eventually led him to Indiana University where he received his Ph.D. in folklore with a minor in African studies in 1978. Johnson began teaching in the Folklore and Ethnomusicology department at IU in 1979 until his retirement in 2006. Somali poetry remains one of his central research interests, along with popular culture and Malian folklore.
