Background

Biographical / Historical:

Francis M. Whitehouse, born in 1848 in New York, was an architect best known for designing the Choral Building at the World's Columbian Exhibition in Chicago, 1893. Called Chicago's "most popular residential architect of that time" (Chicago's Historic Hyde Park, Susan O'Connor Davis, p. 386 of Appendix), Whitehouse also notably designed the Church of the Epiphany at Adams Street and Ashland Avenue and the first National Bank Building at Dearborn and Monroe Streets as junior partner in the firm of Burling & Whitehouse.

Scope and Content:

The bulk of the collection consists of large photographic prints of residential buildings and churches designed by Whitehouse. Also present are a number of related floor plans, elevations, and sections.
