Background

Biographical / Historical:

Daniel Weissbort, 1935-2013, was a translator and poet. He was born in London on April 30, 1935. He attended Cambridge and the London School of Economics, where he studied history and Soviet literary politics, respectively. He was a noted translation scholar and translator of Russian poetry who also wrote and edited translation collections and anthologies, including Translation - Theory and Practice: A Historical Reader, and Anthology of Russian Women Poets. His notable translations include Russian poets Yunna Morits and Nikolai Zablotsky. In 1965, he founded the magazine Modern Poetry with friend Ted Hughes. He was Emeritus Professor of Comparative Literature at King's College London and the University of Iowa, where he directed the MFA in Translation for almost 30 years. He also was designated Honorary professor in the Centre for Translation and Comparative Cultural Studies at the University of Warwick. Weissbort died on November 18, 2013.

Scope and Content:

Subject files include items related to the "Mona Baker Affair," files related to Lev Losseff, Peter Viereck, The Warsaw Pact Invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968, conference files from Krakow in 2004, IWP in 1998, and files related to the UBC Vancouver Fellowship in 2003.

Correspondence includes emails and letters from translators, academics, editors, and publishers. Notable correspondents include: Russian poet Yunna Morits, James Kirkup, and Oxford University Press publishers. Miscellaneous correspondence throughout includes emails and letters related to the Historical Reader and Modern Poetry in Translation.

Translations include files related to poetry of Yunna Morits, From Russia With Love: Joseph Brodsky in English, and Russian poet Inna Lisnianskaya. Anthologies includes files related to Weissbort's major anthologies, including the Historical Reader, Anthology of Russian Women Poets, and files related to Ted Hughes: Selected Translations. Faculty Files includes notes and class files related to Weissbort's instruction in translation, including translation history and theory.
